What is VETO power

What is VETO power

Two days ago, news came that the US had brought a resolution against Russia in the UNSC. India, maintaining its old brotherhood with Russia, did not vote in favor of the resolution. Neither China nor the UAE voted on it. 11 countries supported the proposal.

The proposal was rejected despite the support of 11 out of 15 countries

Why ??

I will post this short post for some information.

The purpose is to make it easier for readers to understand the UN and UNSC.

UN means United Nations (UN) .. which was established immediately after the Second World War .. with the aim of preventing such dangerous big wars in the future and maintaining peace in the world. At the time of its establishment, a total of 51 countries were its members, now numbering 193. This means that all the countries of the world are involved in the UN

This is the UN's UNSC Council, which represents the UN for world security. The UNSC has a total of 15 countries, 5 permanent and 10 non-permanent.

Any decision of the 15-nation council must be ratified by all 193 countries in the world.

Example: -

Russia invades Ukraine. Ukraine asked UNSC for help to save us from Russia or join us in fighting against it. Most UNSC countries felt that it was true that we should help Ukraine. That is why the United States, a member of the UNSC, proposed to stop Russia. If the resolution is passed, Russia will have to stop, and if not, the armies of the UN will be ready to go to war against Russia. UN means the whole world. And no country can fight a war against the whole world.
But we saw that this UNSC proposal was not approved.

Who approves or rejects UNSC's proposal and how?

The 15 member states of the UNSC have the power to approve or reject the proposal.

There are 5 permanent members and 10 temporary members from 15 countries.

Under normal circumstances, if veto power is not used, the proposal is approved or rejected by the majority.

But 5 out of 15 countries that have permanent membership have veto power. This vetopower is a great power. Any of the five countries with veto power can use its veto to reject any proposal.

Even if there are 14 countries in support of the proposal and only 1 country in opposition, if that 1 country has veto power and rejects the proposal, then the decision has to be accepted by all. A total of five countries with this veto power are as follows. And these countries are permanent members and no one can remove them from UNSC.
1: - America
2: - Russia
3: - China
4: - United Kingdom (Britain)
5: - France

The other ten (10) countries are temporary members of the UNSC. Who can be excluded from UNSC. The current temporary membership is as follows.

1: - Albania
2: - Brazil
3: - Gabon
4: - Ghana
5: - India
6: - Ireland
7: - Kenya
8: - Mexico
9: - Norway
10: - United Arab Emirates

If we consider the above example further, the proposal brought by the United States was supported by 11 UNSC countries. India, China and the United Arab Emirates did not vote. And finally Russia used its veto power to blow up the proposal with a single blow. Russia would not have allowed the proposal even if the non-voting countries had supported the US proposal. Because a country with veto power has such power that even that country can reject any UNSC proposal.
